Synopsis

Welcome to the online "prequel" of Lost in Sunshine, in which we follow our two main characters, Lyn and Bob, before they'll meet in the upcoming movie.

Lyn Blue is unhappily married, pushing 30, working a dead-end job at a rundown motel, and suffocating in her tiny hometown of Sunshine, Texas.  She started her blog in 2009 as an outlet to vent her rants and bitchy observations without pissing anyone off in person.  In the process, she's also developed the tiniest bit of introspection, too.

Bob Brown has been rootless for over three years now.  He doesn't talk about his (secret) past, or what launched his drifting, because he feels he can't change it.  He's determined to only look forward, always.  His blog started in 2010 as he began keeping notes, ideas, and observations for his self-help manuscript-in-progress.

Prequel Synopsis

If you've been reading Lyn's Blog lately, you'll know that as of January 2011:

  • Lyn's husband, Tom, aka "the log," has been acting moody and more distracted than usual.  His impeccable cleanliness has disappeared, and he's been leaving dirty underwear on the floor - ew!  Lyn wonders why he's been so pissy lately.
  • On the other hand, Lyn FINALLY got some nookie right around Christmastime!
  • Lyn has learned that her friend and neighbor, Marge, has lupus.  This scares Lyn because Marge seems to really "get" Lyn, and they've bonded over rescuing animals together.
  • Lyn's best friend, Johnny, thinks she should start an organization called The National Association of Unsolicited Opinions.  Lyn thinks he's full of shit.  Funny, but full of shit.

If you've been reading Bob's Blog (Manuscript) lately, you'll know that as of January 2011:

  • Bob has begun experimenting with writing inspirational poetry.
  • He had a job interview at a shop called Donut Hole in mid-December, but slept through it.
  • Bob took a personality test for a leasing job in November, and they said they'd "get back to him."  They still haven't.
  • His current gig is babysitting five-year-old Zak, while holing out as a volunteer at a Retirement Home.  He really likes the kid, and the old folks.

Movie Synopsis

Lyn Blue is slowly suffocating in tiny Sunshine, Texas. She distracts herself with animal rescues and impromptu re-enactments of her favorite movies. But, in the end, none of it matters, because she knows she’s going to die.

Bob Brown is desperately convinced that he has the power to manifest his own happy reality. A new beginning in an out-of-the-way town is just what he needs to finish his self-help manuscript, submit it to a publisher, and become a best-selling author.

When Lyn hires Bob for a job, he thinks she “sees” something in him.  Lyn brushes him off.  She didn’t ask to be like her mom that way.  But, when Lyn learns she’s unexpectedly pregnant, and Bob lends an eager, sympathetic ear, she glimpses something: escape.

They flee Sunshine. What Bob doesn’t know is that Lyn’s not sure her baby is her husband’s, and she stole cash from work. What Lyn doesn’t know is that Bob is a gambling addict who abandoned his wife and child.

Lyn’s been trying to sink her own boat for as long as she can remember, and as her 30th birthday gets closer, she’s been upping the ante.  This pregnancy doesn’t change her future, or does it?  Running off with Bob isn’t going to make her life better, or is it?

A month of spontaneous bigamy, an abortion clinic visit, a gambling fiasco, a convenience store robbery, and one seduced hitchhiker later, Lyn abandons a devastated Bob in a Walmart parking lot and drives to a beach. Standing at the water’s edge, she unravels at her mother’s memory.  Her feet enter the water...

It's now or never - if she and Bob can both stop running away, they’ll have a chance at finding themselves.  If not, they’ll remain lost in sunshine.
