The past week, I've had the luxury of being in production meetings with my producer, Lorie. I say luxury, because she lives in MN, and I live in TX. :) That's how we roll - remotely efficient. With team members here, there, and even LA, we must keep the momentum up and rising by being available and consistent with our efforts. It seems that Lorie and I now communicate just about every day now, as we get closer to our official pre-production dates. And we speak about 3 times a week, depending on anything that may be pressing.

Think of a producer as an entrepreneur, coach, project manager, counselor, and artist all wrapped up in one Tasmanian Devil whirl of a person.  First, I look for stories and characters that stand out and are well-told.  Then, I work with writers and directors to draw out their visions and sharpen them, in order to communicate them with crew, cast, editors, and ultimately, audiences.

Lorie is always thinking of exciting new ways to get everyone involved in what we're doing, and where we're going.

Last week, she sent out an email to the Lost In Sunshine crew that was inspired by one of Ted Hope's prolific blog posts, "Ten Things to do before you submit a script."

    Two of Ted's tips were:

    9) Make it somehow provocative, intriguing, audacious, or thought provoking -- something that will make it stand out.

This week, our Lost In Sunshine producer, Lorie Marsh, posted a GREAT BLOG about our production status and money, honey. I've been learning so much lately from Lorie, and just being a part of this whole process. Producers = major respect in my world. It's a no-joke kinda job. :)

Here are a few more pictures from our latest scout. We've finally decided - no really - for real this time - on our "Sunshine."

After collective efforts between our art director, Ia, myself, and DP, Iskra, and several scouting trips around S. Texas, we've made our final decision that will portray the face of Sunshine.

I think this must have been the FOGGIEST day of the year. It's almost comical. The dismal sense you feel when looking at these images. It would've been perfect if we were filming.. oh, I don't know... Friday the 13th, part 100, that day. :)

If there's one thing I've taken away from my addictive, gossip (trash) magazines over the past several years it's this - you can be hot one day, and not the next. Of course, unless you're Brad Pitt. Hang on... are you? Ok.. no? So, let's continue. :)

When someone calls you and asks you for a favor - perhaps to pick your brain, perhaps to reach out to someone you know in their behalf, or to give them a reference, (assuming this person is a friend and reliable person) what do YOU do? Do you make a call, send an email, or avoid theirs?

    I think so.

I've been in O'ahu this past week on vacation. When I first made arrangements to come here a part of me felt guilty... should I be going anywhere with so much work going on at home right now (our film, Lost In Sunshine & Aether Paranormal deal in the making)? But we go on one trip a year, and start to get a little antsy when we plant our butts too long in a chair. My brain starts to get stale.

By the way, I keep another blog here.  In it, I post "Meet the Producer" segments with other independent film producers, talk about indie producing in general, and provide relevant links on current industry trends and events.

Right now I want to talk about story, because story is our foundation for making good films - and my first love. :)

For the past month or so, Ia, Iskra and I have been relentlessly scouting for our town of Sunshine. When our first idea didn't work out with respect to composition/angles/landscape we had to consider all other Texas options to best represent our vision.

Many towns later, we agreed to sew together a few nearby towns and call them (it) Sunshine. With the brilliant eye of my art director, and DP, we've made some headway, but now it's time to find our motel.

Here's a few pics out of the thousands we took. ;)

Stay in touch!

We'd LOVE to keep you in the loop with how the film is coming along.
